About Hyacinth Macaw
Personality & Behavior
Known as “gentle giants,” the Hyacinth Macaws are very affectionate birds by nature. They are easily trained and tend to bond strongly with their human caregivers. Despite their tremendous strength, this is one of the most laid back and easygoing of all of the macaws. The most striking part of a Hyacinth Macaw is its cobalt blue plumage. The Hyacinth Macaw is almost entirely blue and has black under the wings. It has a large black beak with bright yellow along the lower part of the beak and yellow circling its eyes. The female and male are nearly indistinguishable, although the female is typically a bit more slender. They are usually quite docile and easygoing and seem to enjoy learning and human companionship. A Hyacinth Macaw’s beak can snap metal, which means that they must be taught at an early age not to “mouth” their human caregivers — no matter how gently. The best bet for a Hyacinth is a cage made of stainless steel. These big birds need plenty of room to exercise and play, as well as plenty of supervision to make sure they do not get into anything dangerous.
